Is Self-Care Selfish?

Is Self-Care Selfish?
Posted on April 10, 2024

These days, the topic of self-care may sound like just another indulgent trend among the wealthy, influencers, or younger generation but there really are significant benefits to practicing this and making it a priority in your life. So what is self-care?

It may sound self-explanatory but essentially it's the practice of deliberately and mindfully taking care of our own emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical health. What's the first thing you're told on an airplane? Put the oxygen mask on yourself, right? After all, how can you take care of someone else if you're in danger? The same goes for your daily needs. With all the stresses, time constraints, and everything else demanding attention, doesn't it make sense to add a nurturing piece to your routine?

When you make the time to support yourself, you're saying, "I am important. My health is important." It validates your needs and lets you honor your relationships, goals, and beliefs. By taking the time to care for yourself, you'll feel more energized, be able to handle stresses better, and change the limiting mindsets and destructive behaviors that don't support your wellbeing. So go take a hot bath, go for a walk, read a book, listen to soothing music, or indulge in that chai latte. You're not being selfish. You're being healthy for life!
